Soon after we published our series of special reports on organ trafficking, we received this email from the office of DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral informing us of progress in the approval of the IRR implementing the provision on organ trafficking in the anti-human trafficking law.
The Philippine embassy issued a stern warning against Filipinos acting as “middlemen” in the rampant sale of human organs from comatose overseas Filipino workers in Kuwait.
The embassy has recorded five cases of organ donation already.
The remains of Cherrie Ann Guzman-Coleman arrived in the Philippines from Japan on October 13, 2007. The body was claimed by her mother, Ms. Myrna Vergara, who could not believe it was her daughter. She remembers their recent telephone conversation last October 3. Cherrie Ann was happy talking with her; she said she is going to get her younger sister, Jennifer, to live with her in Japan. At the same time, she kept hearing the voice of Cherrie Ann’s friend who relayed to her that her daughter died, that she hung herself on October 4 – just a day after their happy conversation.
Effective communication, education, information sharing, and collaboration among advocates, law enforcement officials, and service providers are essential to preventing human trafficking and protecting and reintegrating victims. The Internet answers to most of these needs by enabling a low-cost, broadly accessible platform for information dissemination, management, and exchange.
